AI Template Generator

Learn how to use Risk Memo's AI-powered checklist template generator to quickly transform existing paper forms or simple text instructions into actionable, digital checklist templates.

Last updated 14 October 2026

The AI Template Generator builds a checklist template for you in a few minutes. You can either upload an existing checklist as a PDF and have it converted, or describe the checklist you need and let AI write it.

It’s a quick way to get started, and you can edit everything afterwards.

Generate a template

  1. Go to app.riskmemo.com and log in with a Contributor account.

  2. Click here to open the generator.

  3. Give the AI something to work from:

    1. Have a checklist already? Use “Upload PDF” to choose the file. The AI copies its content as closely as it can. Instructions are optional when you upload a pdf.
    2. Starting from scratch? Describe the checklist you need in the Instructions box
  4. Click Generate Template. This usually takes a minute or so.

  5. Review the preview of the generated template.

  6. Click Save & Edit. The template is saved and opens in the template builder, ready for you to refine.

Writing good instructions

The more specific your instructions, the better the checklist. Instructions can be up to 350 characters, so make every word count.

  • Say what the checklist is for. Name the task, the site or equipment, and who will complete it.
  • Name the response types you want. For example, ask for a signature at the end or a photo of the work area.
  • When you upload a PDF, say what to change. By default the AI copies the PDF as is. Use instructions to ask it to add, remove or reword content.

Example prompt:

Pre-use checklist for a loaded canoe trailer. Record the driver, the trailer and today’s date. Add yes/hazard checks and a signature to finish.

The AI can use these response types:

  • Checkbox: Quick check, warning or hazard responses
  • Select: A choice from a set list of options
  • Text: Free text, numbers or email addresses
  • Date: Picking a date
  • Image: Attaching a photo
  • Location: Entering or capturing a location
  • Equipment: Choosing equipment
  • People: Naming the people involved
  • Signature: Signing off
  • Instruction: Information or guidance, with no response needed

Review, edit or start again

Don’t worry if the first result isn’t quite right. You have two options:

  1. Save & Edit: Saves the template and opens it in the template builder. You can change everything there, including questions, sections, pages and response types.
  2. Start again: Discards the generated template. Your instructions are kept, so you can adjust them and click Generate Template again.

Important: Always review a generated template before you use it. AI can produce incorrect questions or leave out safety-critical ones, and it doesn’t replace an experienced, competent person.
